Location
Readings are location-based, and here is exactly how location works:
- By default we do not ask for your location. We pick a representative city from your device's timezone setting, no permission prompt, nothing sent anywhere.
- If you search a city, the text you type is sent to a geocoding service (Open-Meteo for suggestions, OpenWeatherMap for lookup) to turn it into coordinates.
- If you tap the location button, your browser asks for permission first. The coordinates are used in your browser to compute the sky and are sent to OpenWeatherMap to fetch current weather and a place name.
- Storage: your chosen location (coordinates and place name) is saved in your browser's
localStorageso your next visit opens where you left off. Your location is not stored on our servers.
Preferences
Your theme choice (light/dark) and, as planner features grow, your saved filters are stored in localStorage on your device. Clearing your browser storage removes them.
Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless measurement tool, to count page views in aggregate. It sets no cookies, does no fingerprinting, does no cross-site tracking, and stores no personal data about you. It tells us which pages are read, never who read them. No advertising pixels of any kind. If our analytics ever change, this policy will be updated first and the new tool will be named here.
Product measurement
To learn which parts of the almanac actually help, we also keep our own simple tallies. When a feature is used, say the planner is opened or a reading is finished, our server adds one to a daily count for that feature. A tally is only a name and a number, such as "planner opened, 14 times on this date". That is the whole record.
These counts never include cookies, IP addresses, location, or any identifier, and nothing you type is ever part of them. They cannot be traced back to you, and they do not follow you across the web. If your browser sends the Do Not Track signal, we do not count you at all. The counts stay on our own server and go nowhere else; we use them for one thing, deciding which features deserve more care. So that one connection cannot flood those counts, we hold your IP address briefly, for up to ten minutes, in a separate counter that is discarded automatically. It is never part of the tallies themselves, and it is never written to our logs.
Email (waitlist and daily briefings)
If you give us your email address for the Premium waitlist or a daily briefing, we store it with our email provider, use it only for what you signed up for, and every message includes an unsubscribe link. We never sell or share addresses.
We also keep a copy on our own side: your address, the page you signed up from, which emails you asked for, and the one interest you picked, if you picked one. We use this data for one thing, knowing what you want to see. If a signup does not reach the provider, we hold your address until it does, so it is not lost.
Signing up also sends your IP address to that provider, at that moment, so it can check the signup comes from a real person and not a bot. It is the same address every site you visit already sees. We never write it to our logs. We do hold it briefly on our own side, for up to ten minutes, only to limit how many signups can come from one connection, and it is discarded automatically after that. It is not used for anything else. This is a separate matter from the tallies described above, which never include IP addresses.
Third-party services
- Cloudflare Pages hosts the site and, like any host, keeps standard server logs (IP address, request path) for security and operations.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views in aggregate, without cookies, fingerprinting, or cross-site tracking (see Analytics above).
- OpenWeatherMap receives coordinates (and city searches) to return weather and place names. Their policy.
- Open-Meteo receives city-search text to return suggestions. Their terms.
Children
The site is a general-audience almanac and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
