Birth moon sign versus the Moon's current sign

A birth moon sign belongs to a person. It is based on where the Moon was when that person was born. The Moon's current sign belongs to the day. It is the sign the Moon is passing through right now. When we talk about today's signs, the body-map headline, the 7-day outlook, and the Sign Index, we are talking about the Moon's current sign, not your birth moon sign.

As the Moon orbits Earth, it appears to move through the same twelve zodiac signs the Sun does, only far faster. The Sun spends about a month in each sign, while the Moon's current sign shifts every couple of days. So a single week can carry the Moon through several signs, and several body areas on the Woman & Man of Signs.

How often the Moon changes signs

The Moon completes the full circle of all twelve signs in about 27.3 days. That works out to roughly two to two-and-a-half days per sign. The 7-day outlook shows when these sign changes happen, so you can see the hand-offs coming.

Sign and phase: two dials, not one

The daily reading is built from two things the Moon is doing at once: its current sign and its phase. The current sign tells us where the Moon is in the zodiac and which body area the old map connects it to. The phase tells us whether the Moon is building, peaking, releasing, or settling.

Some signs are treated in almanac lore as more fruitful or growth-oriented, while others are treated as better for clearing, cutting, harvesting, restraint, or rest.

How this affects the score

The Moon's current sign helps determine the body area and traditional character of the day. The phase helps determine direction: increase, peak, release, store, clear, or rest. The Sign Index weighs those lunar factors against the activity you are asking about. That is why the same day can be favorable for one thing and less favorable for another.

Why waxing, full, and waning differ

Phase is the Moon's tide. Tradition reads its direction, and so does the daily reading.

Waxing (new toward full): building

From the new Moon to the full Moon, the lit face grows. Tradition reads the waxing Moon as a building, rising time, often favored for beginnings, fresh growth, and anything you hope to increase.

Full Moon: the peak

At the full Moon, the light is at its fullest. Almanac lore treats it as vivid and culminating, often favored for harvest and completion, and traditionally a time for calm rather than scattered, hurried plans.

Waning (full toward new): settling

After the full Moon, the light recedes. Tradition reads the waning Moon as a settling, releasing time, often favored for finishing, grounding, storing, clearing, and rest.

How location and time change the calculation

Here is where a live digital experience can be more precise than a printed almanac. The Moon's current sign at a given instant is broadly the same for everyone, but two things that matter to your day are local:

• Which calendar day a sign change appears on. If the Moon moves into a new sign at 1:00 a.m. in New York, it is still the night before in Los Angeles. We use your time zone to place each day's reading on the right date for you.
• Moonrise, moonset, sunrise, and sunset. These depend on your latitude and longitude. On the same night, the Moon rises at a different clock time in Miami than in Seattle. We calculate these from your location.
